Taste the Season: A Guide to Fruit Picking in Japan (From Mountain Orchards to Train-Accessible Farms)

There is something magical about eating fruit at the absolute peak of its season, straight from the branch. In Japan, fruit cultivation is treated almost like an art form. Farmers pour incredible care into growing perfect, sweet, and incredibly juicy varieties—many of which boast unique flavor profiles you simply cannot find back home.

Venturing out into Japan’s orchards during the spring and summer isn’t just about delicious food, though. It’s a wonderful way to escape the standard tourist trails, connect directly with local farmers, and support rural businesses.

From the famous strawberries of spring to the legendary, velvety peaches of mid-summer, here is how to experience Japan’s vibrant “fruit tourism”—even if you don’t have a car.

The Rural Reality: Our Trip to Nayama Farm (名山農園)

To experience the pinnacle of summer peach picking, we headed to Nayama Farm (名山農園), tucked away in the beautiful, rural hills of Katsuragi-cho in Wakayama Prefecture.

Wakayama is famous as western Japan’s “Fruit Kingdom”, and Nayama Farm is run by officially certified “Eco Farmers” who grow about 15 different varieties of peaches—including the absolute crown jewel of summer, Hakuho peaches. When we arrived, the orchard was stunning, but getting there really highlighted the unique logistics of rural Japanese travel.

Why You’ll Want to Rent a Car

While public transit in Japan is usually a breeze, rural orchards like Nayama are located along rolling mountain slopes far from major urban hubs. To get to this farm, we highly recommend renting a car.

While there is technically a train station in the area (JR Kaseada Station is about a 30-minute walk away, though walking along narrow country roads without proper sidewalks isn’t always ideal), having your own wheels makes the trip seamless. Renting a car also gives you the freedom to explore the gorgeous surrounding countryside, stop by local roadside markets (Michi-no-Eki), and carry your fresh, heavy fruit boxes back home with ease!

The Sweet Reward

Once we arrived, all the travel logistics were immediately forgotten. At Nayama Farm, they offer a brilliant 取り置き食べ放題 (all-you-can-eat, pre-chilled peach experience). Because freshly picked peaches can sometimes be quite warm from the summer sun, the farm staff wonderfully provide you with perfectly ripe, ice-cold peaches that they have chilled ahead of time for you to feast on! On top of the eating experience, you also get to wander into the gorgeous orchard to harvest a couple of your own fresh peaches directly from the trees to take home as souvenirs. It’s a wonderful way to connect with local growers, support a sustainable farm, and taste a level of juicy, melt-in-your-mouth sweetness that you just can’t find in a standard supermarket back home.

Pro-Tips for Your Fruit Picking Adventure

  • Reservations are Key: Because fruit ripens on nature’s schedule, almost all picking experiences require booking a time slot in advance via their websites.
  • Learn the Rules: Some farms operate on an all-you-can-eat system within a 30 to 60-minute window, while others expect you to pick a basket and pay by weight. Always check if you’re allowed to take fruit home before you start filling your bags!
  • Dress Comfortably: Wear sturdy sneakers and clothes you don’t mind getting a little dusty. Greenhouses and orchards get incredibly warm under the summer sun!
