Working for a travel company gives me the opportunity to learn about many wonderful destinations across Japan.
Every place has its own unique charm, but there are only a few that truly make me think, “I absolutely want to come back.”
For me, that special place is Amami Oshima and Kakeromajima, a small island located just a 20-minute ferry ride from the town of Koniya.
The first time I visited, my very first thought was, “Is this really Japan?”
Before me stretched crystal-clear blue waters, untouched nature, and a peaceful landscape unlike anything I had experienced before. Instead of traffic and city noise, all I could hear were birds singing, the wind through the trees, and the gentle sound of the waves.
Time seemed to slow down.
Without even realizing it, I stopped checking my phone and simply enjoyed the scenery around me.
During that quiet moment, I found myself thinking that perhaps we need far less than we imagine to live a happy life.
On Kakeromajima, doing nothing becomes the greatest luxury.
Watching the ocean in the morning, swimming in the incredibly clear sea during the day, and quietly admiring the changing colors of the sunset in the evening.
It may sound simple, yet those moments filled my heart in a way I had never expected.
What made this journey truly unforgettable, however, was not only the breathtaking scenery.
The people of the island welcomed us with genuine warmth, almost as if we were members of their own family. Their kindness reminded me of the importance of human connection, something that is often forgotten in our busy daily lives.
Of course, Kakeromajima is not as convenient as a city.
There are very few convenience stores or supermarkets, and in some areas, even mobile phone service is unavailable.
Yet it is precisely this “little inconvenience” that allows you to fully appreciate the beauty around you and spend meaningful time with the people traveling beside you.
Some journeys are about seeing beautiful places.
But a trip to Amami Oshima and Kakeromajima gives you something even more valuable—you return home feeling refreshed, inspired, and ready to move forward again.
That is why I confidently recommend this destination to anyone looking for a truly unforgettable travel experience.
Travel Tips
Kakeromajima offers breathtaking nature and a peaceful island atmosphere, but it is not as convenient as an urban destination.
With a little preparation, however, you can fully enjoy everything the island has to offer.
■ Renting a Car Is Highly Recommended
Public transportation on both Amami Oshima and Kakeromajima is limited.
Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore the island’s beautiful beaches, scenic viewpoints, and hidden spots at your own pace.
■ Reserve the Ferry for Your Vehicle
You can take your rental car across to Kakeromajima by ferry from Koniya Port.
Vehicle spaces are limited and may fill up quickly during busy seasons, so making a reservation in advance is highly recommended.
■ Plan Your Meals Ahead
There are only a handful of restaurants on Kakeromajima, and many have limited opening days and hours.
We recommend making reservations in advance or choosing accommodation that includes breakfast and dinner.
■ Shop Before Crossing to the Island
Kakeromajima has no large supermarkets or convenience stores.
Be sure to purchase drinks, snacks, and any daily necessities on Amami Oshima before boarding the ferry.
Although the island may feel a little less convenient than city life, that is part of its unique charm.
Take this opportunity to slow down, immerse yourself in nature, and experience the peaceful rhythm of island life.
