Miko Experience

What is a Miko ?
Miko

A miko (巫女) is a shrine maiden who serves at a Shinto shrine in Japan. Traditionally, miko were believed to have spiritual abilities, acting as mediums between humans and the gods. Today, their role is more ceremonial and supportive: they assist priests, perform sacred dances called kagura, and help maintain the shrine.

Easily recognizable by their distinctive attire—a white kimono top and bright red hakama—miko are an iconic part of Japanese religious culture and are often seen during festivals and special events, where they contribute to the serene and spiritual atmosphere of the shrine.

Negainomiya
The Setting: Negainomiya

Your journey takes place at Negainomiya, a sanctuary celebrated for its serene energy and its mission to connect ancient wisdom with modern hearts. Unlike the vast, crowded shrines of the city, Negainomiya offers an intimate atmosphere where the sacred feels personal. It is here, under the guidance of practitioners dedicated to the art of Shinto, that you will explore the depths of Japanese spirituality in a space designed for reflection and discovery.

The Attire | Preparing to Enter the Sacred Space

Your journey begins by wearing the traditional Miko attire. The white kosode (robe) and red hakama symbolize purity and renewal, preparing both your mind and body to step into a sacred space.

Tradition | Roles and History

Miko were once believed to convey the words of the divine. In this program, you will learn about their historical role and significance, gaining a deeper understanding of their place within Shinto tradition.

The Grace | Posture and Movement

You will learn the fundamental etiquette of Shinto, including formal sitting (seiza), standing, and walking within sacred grounds. Through slow and mindful movements, your posture and breathing naturally align, bringing a sense of calm and balance.

The Ritual | Tamagushi Offering

After receiving a purification ritual, you will take part in the offering of a sacred Tamagushi branch, performed in the same manner as an actual Shinto ceremony. This is not simply an activity, but a formal act of gratitude and prayer, a moment of spiritual purification and inner alignment.

Memories | Photography

Following the experience, you will have the opportunity to take commemorative photos in your Miko attire, with the shrine as your backdrop. These images will serve as a lasting memory of your time spent in a sacred space.
